envisioning a new way to write philosophy

What is (x)?
Why is (x)?
How does (x)?

(x) stands for “proposition x.”

It envisions a way of doing philosophy that systemically numbers all significant propositions, starting from (1).

This approach could make philosophy more precise, transparent, structurally sound, and easier to debug. (x) strives for this future by pursuing projects online and offline, prospective and retrospective.

platform

(x) provides a platform for philosophers and philosophy students to develop, analyze, and discuss ideas encapsulated and cataloged in propositions, or what it calls (x)s. It also opens and vitalizes discourse on controversial (x)s (see, for instance, (1), (24), and (35)) and celebrates a collaborative approach to philosophy.

outreach

In accordance with its belief that philosophy is a public and sociocultural enterprise, (x) runs conferences, forums, the (x) podcast, and (x) of the week both online and offline. It contends that propositionalizing does not just benefit philosophers but contributes to the democratization of the discipline.

rigor

The core values of (x) are precision and clarity. It understands that these values are best realized in the analytic approach to philosophy, and

it contributes to the metaphilosophical discourse by advocating for and experimenting with a widespread and systematic use of numbered propositions.

community

(x) celebrates inclusivity and diversity in its online and offline community. It hopes to counteract the stereotype of the armchair philosopher and underscore philosophy’s interactive nature, which can be traced to Socrates. Unlike Socrates’s pupils, however, (x) is decentralized and members hold diverse opinions.

HiSCAP
High School Center for Analytic Philosophy

In addition to exploring the theory and practice of propositionalization, (x) is the parent organization of HiSCAP, a one-stop hub for high schoolers seeking to learn analytic philosophy. It is the first organization to address the gross imbalance between resources for analytic and continental philosophy at the high school level.

This issue is urgent since analytic philosophy is dominant in contemporary philosophy, and it offers a rich and acute perspective that is severely underrepresented in philosophy at lower levels and in public perception. Explore HiSCAP by clicking on one of the choices below:
